Martin F. Krafft ("madduck") is a dedicated Debian developer who focuses on integration tasks and process improvement, and maintains a few packages, such as mdadm, hibernate, and logcheck. He is the author of the book The Debian System. Martin currently researches how new methods might be deployed in global volunteer projects to increase their efficiency. He spear-heads a cross-distro packaging collaboration effort and hacks on an improved (cross-distro) network configuration management system, if there is time left in the day. Martin serves on the Hackontest Jury.

I would appreciate more information on how you plan to implement this.
I really hope this will be implemented on the X level, rather than anything GNOME or Ubuntu-specific
This is now an accepted GSoC project: http://code.google.com/soc/2008/debian/appinfo.html?csaid=15A185888ADDFA6B Any implementation of this feature would have to happen in symphony with the GSoC student and his mentor. This is not meant to be a discouragement, just FYI...
If this is supposed to become a real Debian package, it has to support automatic upgrades.
This feature has also been proposed under Debian. I would suggest that any such effort happens at the Debian level such that *both* projects can profit.
